Craig wasn’t trying to change his congregation when he wrote his manifesto. He was hoping to impress his wife. But when he inadvertently emails it to another woman, he sets in motion a chain of events he’s sure will cost him his job. Caught between an ambitious volunteer’s reckless quest for justice and a tyrannical board member’s declaration of war against those who disagree with him, Craig must choose a side. It’s a miserable position for a pastor who longs to be a hero without putting himself at risk. The Deborah Club is a dark, sometimes funny tale about the corrosive nature of church politics on the hearts of well-meaning Christians who, in the midst of a power struggle, find themselves behaving nothing like Christ.

This is a great study of group dynamics, church politics, and the distinction between organic power and titular authority in volunteer organizations. Thankfully, the author's prose is more dynamic than that horribly ponderous sentence. It is a fascinating display of how those who THINK they are in charge of things often are not, and how quickly things can get out of hand. The story brilliantly chronicles the truth that it is rarely so "easy to be head clown when it's you that has to run the circus."Regardless of whether you can identify with the particular doctrinal issues involved, there is much to learn from watching these characters. The writing is first rate. Mr./Ms. Pierce has crafted a well paced book that will hook you and keep you hooked until the end. There are some passages (a funeral eulogy, for one) that are achingly beautiful. This book is well worth studying for its story structure and writing, regardless of your interest in modern American church life.

The Deborah Club D W Pierce 9781542731539 Books Reviews
D.W. Pierce's debut novel begins with the main character stepping in it and trying to cover his tracks. The result is a funny, awkward, hard-hitting story about how men and women battle for power, in this case the unlikely setting of a church. I couldn't put the book down. It's a fun read, but it will leave men and women alike thinking more seriously about the power games people play in all kinds of organizations, not just churches. Pierce packs a punch in The Deborah Club, and many surprises await the reader who enjoys clever, tasteful innuendo, smart dialogue, and crisp plot lines that don't meander but keep you marching to the conclusion.
At South Barkley Bible Church, women are not permitted to speak from the pulpit or hold leadership positions. Many in the congregation would like that to change, but the elders have been dragging their feet on the issue for years. Pastor Craig vents his frustration about the situation by writing a manifesto, calling upon the women in the congregation to assert themselves. He intends his words to be seen only by his wife. But when Craig emails the document to another woman in the congregation by mistake, the recipient decides to carry out his manifesto. The ensuing power struggle brings out the worst in everyone involved.
I found this novel to be entertaining and thought-provoking.
Great book. Get into it friends.
First fiction book I have read in a while. However, could be very close to real life. Very compelling book. Will be looking for more from D.W. Pierce
Very interesting read! Characters are interesting, plot is interesting. An easy read and very thought provoking.
This book captures well the complexity of relationships - especially when attempting to change something in a church. It is a helpful read for anyone that cares about their church whether you want change or resist change.
Great book and I enjoyed every second. The only reason for the four stars is that I felt it ended prematurely, without sufficient resolution of the problem. Could have used a few more chapters/epilogue detailing how everything turned out.
