"This story isn't just about abduction or falling in love. You will keep guessing who the "Hidden Monster" of the story is until right up to the end." ~Adventures In All Things Food Blog

Trust few. Love none. The Monster could be anyone...

For seventeen-year-old Samantha Campbell, running back woods trails usually means freedom from her less-than-perfect life. That is, until the day a morning run turns into a living nightmare. When Samantha wakes up to find herself bound to a dirty, pinstriped mattress, she realizes she’s anything but free. With a masked abductor repeatedly injecting her arm with an unknown substance while holding her captive, Samantha tries in vain to find out what he wants, but he refuses to speak. Until the day he breaks his silence and his twisted words are worse than what she’d imagined. He promises her one day she will fall in love with him but the best part will be that she won't know who he is... until it's too late.

Finding herself freed from captivity, with her captor still at large, Samantha is on guard against everything and everyone around her. Unfortunately, walling up her heart proves difficult when eighteen-year-old Blake Knightley moves in next door. When Samantha starts experiencing strange changes within her, she realizes her captor may have left her more damaged than she originally thought. Now she must turn to Blake for help in order to unearth the truth behind the monster who started this all... or risk experiencing worse things than just falling in love.

This story started out great with the sudden abduction of Samantha and the weeks she spent in the secluded cabin. It sounded horrifying and disturbing. I was enraptured and thought this would become an excellent story, but I feel that the author dropped the ball once Samantha found her way out of captivity. Some of the following observations are slight spoilers.

1. Samantha's behavior after her captivity was unrealistic. The author describes her as being depressed, wearing unflattering clothing, and trying to look as unattractive as possible for a month or so after she was released, but after she meets a mysterious new boy, that part of her appears to have faded into the background at an unrealistically rapid rate.

2. The romantic aspect is "teenage hormone driven sappy love story." Girl meets guy. Girl is instantly infatuated with handsome guy although she appears to find him irritating, but, ohhhhh, something about him makes fire explode in her nether regions. Within a week they are completely in love and inseparable at the ripe and mature age of 18 and want to get married.

3. Way too much is going on. I feel as if the author was randomly throwing events into the story to make it more interesting, but in reality it made it seem choppy, confusing, and downright unfeasible. First they are here, then they are there, and now they're doing this. Way, way too much going on.

4. The protagonist is a SPURRRCIAL snowflake. By no actions of her own, she goes from average to extraordinary with her own set of special abilities. Everyone wishes for her attention. All the boys are after her. She's practically a snowball.

5. 18 years old is apparently mature enough to be selected to lead an entire nation.

6. Samantha never does anything for herself. Someone always shows up in the nick of time to help her out of whatever situation she found herself thrown into.

I was sorely disappointed with this novel. I really thought it was going to be a a great read, but it fell apart after the first few chapters.

Hidden Monster The Monsters Among Us Book 1 eBook Amanda Strong Reviews

Buckle-up before you turn the page, or swipe your screen. Don't let the pretty cover fool you. Samantha seems to be a target for the unfortunate. A safe morning run turns to a nightmare when she wakes up tied down, and her captor is only around long enough to instill fear. All she knows is what's coming ... the sting. After weeks of mental torture, she wakes up untied and disoriented. Running to save herself, a search party finds her. Now the real haunting begins ... "Who is the monster?"
Trying to find herself again she starts to dream and then strange things begin to happen. Her dreams seem real. Just down the road a new family had moved in. But only one of them has caught Sam's eye, Blake. He touches her inner quarrel and soothes the storm within. Blake seems perfect; too perfect, and she knows that her feelings are getting stronger towards him. But can she trust him? And around every corner the question still follows, "Who is the monster?"
Going back to school has her on edge. It could be anyone. Getting reacquainted with her old friends; Jeremy, her jerk-of-a-jock ex-boyfriend, Jen, her center stage love-crazed friend, and Mack, her touchstone BFF. Sammy and Mack's friendship goes way back to elementary, just after her near drowning, he helped her deal with her fears and remained her friend.
Trust doesn't come easy, but Samantha is willing to place faith in her friends until tensions rise between her ex and Blake. Mack and Blake all of a sudden seem buddy-buddy. Jen is talking about someone from their past she is still head-over heels for. The dreams are now a part of her and terror begins to rip at her resolve. Pieces start to fall into to place, even if she has to smash a few of them to fit. Change isn't always a good thing. As answers become clear, there is only one that keeps alluding her. "Who is her Monster?"
Very well written. I tumbled down the rabbit hole with her. What a who-done-it ride. You did buckle-up, right?
